Nearby Share alternative Edgely Transfer

A Nearby Share alternative that includes macOS and Linux

Nearby Share, now folded into Quick Share, moves files neatly between Android devices and Windows PCs. It stops there. Edgely Transfer covers macOS and Linux as well, so an Android phone can send to a Mac or a Linux laptop without a cable or a cloud.

Where Nearby Share may suit you better

Between two Android devices Quick Share is already there, in the share sheet, with no app to install, and it can use Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct when there is no shared network. Edgely Transfer needs the app on both ends and a network both can see.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I send from an Android phone to a Mac?

Yes. Install Edgely Transfer on both, pair them once with a PIN or a QR code, and files move directly over Wi-Fi. That is the gap Quick Share leaves: it reaches Android and Windows, and stops there.

Which platforms does Edgely Transfer run on?

Windows, macOS and Linux on the desktop, and Android and iOS on the phone. Devices form a "Device Ring": pair once with a PIN or a QR code and files move directly between them over Wi-Fi, discovered on the local network, encrypted end to end with TLS 1.3 and perfect forward secrecy.

Do I need an account or a cloud service to send files?

No account, and no cloud. Transfers are direct, device to device, on your own network, so nothing is uploaded anywhere. There is no relay today either: both devices have to be able to reach each other. A cross-network relay is planned and is not available in any plan.

What does the free tier include?

Sending files to a device is free, together with the Device Ring, the file explorer, clipboard sync and seven days of transfer history. Pro, at 9 euros a year, adds transfers to and from shared folders, resumable transfers and unlimited history. It is also included in Edgely Guard (39 euros a year) and in the Edgely Suite (89 euros a year).

Android to your Mac and your Linux box

Edgely Transfer pairs your phone with the Macs, PCs and Linux machines around you, and moves files directly between them.
