What free actually means, app by app

  • Edgely Console and Edgely Database Manager: every feature, free for personal use.
  • Edgely Guard: every audit, scan, monitor and tool is free; the deep clean itself has a monthly allowance.
  • Edgely Transfer: sending a file and browsing shared folders are free; downloading and uploading from them is the paid tier.
  • Console Mobile, Transfer Mobile and the IDE plugin: no paid tier at all, and no account.

Who it is for

Built for everyone learning to ship software

One free tier, written for the people who are still learning the tools rather than billing for them.

Computer science students
Open a shell on the university lab machine, run the homework database, move files between your laptop and your phone. Nothing to request, nothing to renew.
Teachers and instructors
Set a lab up without a procurement request. The class works in the same SSH, PostgreSQL and Docker tools they will meet in industry, on their own machines.
School and university clubs
A CTF box, a shared MariaDB, a Proxmox lab: every member installs the full app on macOS, Windows or Linux and keeps it.
Self-taught developers
Learning Linux, Docker, Kubernetes or Postgres on your own time costs nothing here, and the features stay unlocked once you are good at it.

In the box

What you get for free

The free tier is the whole application, not a preview of it.

Edgely Console
Sixteen protocols in one window: SSH, SFTP, SCP, FTP/FTPS, WebDAV, RDP, VNC, ARD, WinRM, Telnet, Serial, S3, Docker, Kubernetes, Proxmox and MCP.
Edgely Database Manager
PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQL Server, Oracle, ClickHouse and MongoDB, through one editor, one schema view and one export path. DB2 is coming.
AI assistant
Fourteen task types, from explaining a failing command to reading a log. It runs on your own key, Ollama on your machine or OpenAI or Anthropic, so a class costs nothing per student.
MCP server
Console and Database Manager each run a Model Context Protocol server, so an AI client works through the connections you saved, under the permission tier you grant.
Encrypted vault
Passwords and keys stay in an AES-256-GCM vault on the device, unlocked by a master password or by the operating system keychain.
Cross-device sync
Connections and settings follow you to another machine with an account. Credentials never do, and the server rejects anything that looks like one.
Plugins
REST Client and Broker Client install from the marketplace and run sandboxed inside the app.
No strings
No telemetry, no advertising, no nag screen and no expiry. An account is only needed for sync and licences.

In the classroom

Classroom & club ideas

Four lab shapes that stop being about installing the tool.

Linux administration
One window per student, three saved hosts (web, database, application) and a key kept in the vault. The first lesson is the shell, not the installer.
Database systems
PostgreSQL, MySQL and MongoDB through the same editor, so the syllabus is about the query rather than about which client runs on which laptop.
Containers and clusters
Start a container, open a shell inside it, read its logs and look at the cluster, without leaving the app or memorising the flags first.
AI and MCP lab
Point an MCP client at a lab machine and have the class compare what the model proposes with what the command actually returns.

Where free stops

What the free tier does not cover

The limits are few and they are worth stating plainly, so nobody discovers one in the middle of a lesson.

Paid work
Using Edgely for commercial work needs a subscription. The pricing page lists each one, what it unlocks and the trial that comes with it.
Guard's deep clean
Every audit, scan, monitor, network tool and uninstall in Edgely Guard is free and unmetered. The cleanup operation itself has a monthly allowance on the free tier.
Transfer's downloads and uploads
Sending a file to a device is free, and so is browsing shared folders and remote files. Downloading from them and uploading to them is what the paid tier unlocks.
A school-wide rollout
Central licence management, single sign-on and audit reporting are the organization tiers, sold per seat from ten seats. Classroom and personal use stays free.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Edgely really free for students and teachers?

Yes. Edgely Console and Edgely Database Manager are complete and free for personal use, which is what learning and teaching with them is. Edgely Guard and Edgely Transfer are free with their core features, and the mobile apps and the IDE plugin have no paid tier at all.

Do I need a school email or a .edu address?

No. There is nothing to prove and nothing to apply for: the free tier is open to everyone, and the desktop apps run without an account. An account only adds cross-device sync and licence management.

Can my school install Edgely on its lab machines?

Yes, for teaching and learning. If the school wants central licence management, single sign-on or audit reporting, that is an organization subscription, sold per seat from ten seats. Classroom and personal use stays free.

What does the AI assistant cost?

Nothing from us. It has fourteen task types and runs on your own key: Ollama on your own machine, or OpenAI or Anthropic. Sensitive data is redacted before anything is sent to a cloud provider, and that is on by default.

Can an AI client work on my lab machine through Edgely?

Yes. Edgely Console and Edgely Database Manager each run a Model Context Protocol server, so an MCP client works through the connections you already saved, under the permission tier you grant. Destructive tools stay refused until you grant them.

Where do my passwords go?

Into an encrypted vault on your own device, unlocked by a master password or by the operating system keychain. Sync carries connections and settings, never a password or a private key, and the server refuses anything that looks like one.
